I knew I was going to have fun shooting Brendan and Sarah's wedding from the moment Sarah reached out to me for two main reasons: 1. After I graduated from UVa she had been the president of the feminist club I helped start there and 2. she emailed me from a "Sarah and Brendan's wedding" email address (yes, some people are THAT organized. I am not one of them).
Unsurprisingly, I had a blast. Even though it was raining and they had to move the ceremony from a UVa garden to the reception venue, Old Metropolitan Hall , the event was warm and lovely and utterly spotless. There were tons of amazing DIY details created by Sarah's sister Kristin (who I spent half the evening calling "Jessica"...sorry again, Kristin!) that totally blew me away: pom poms, confetti bags, and even an ENTIRE PHOTO BOOTH. All this plus the most breathtaking calligraphy by their friend Sora Kim. Sarah and Brendan did a great job incorporating things that were important to them into their celebration, including pea soup (Sarah's favorite) shooters and a special, personalized, Arrested-Development-related inside joke monogrammed into Brendan's suit coat (see below). Plus the whole thing was perfectly coordinated by Mallory of Mallory Joyce Design, who was absolutely delightful.
However, fact that the event was impeccably designed and executed isn't what will stick with me for years and years: it's the overwhelming sense of love and support that surrounded Sarah and Brendan the entire time. And their serious love (and mutual respect! Feminism!!) for each other was shining right back out on their community. And it was awesome.
