gina & maggie // richmond, va. engagement

Meet Maggie and Gina, two of the sweetest and mutually adoring people you could hope to know. They joined us in Maymont Park for an engagement photo session, and while the weather turned sour, their spirits never did. Sometimes we have to direct couples to get cozy in front of the camera--but these two were naturals!

Lynchburg locals, Gina and Maggie have tight ties to Richmond: Maggie is a VCU graduate and their first date (of 10 hours!) took place in the city. They’re set for a September wedding this year at the lovely Doe Creek Farm, and we’re already excited to be part of the festivities.

Introducing Leigh "Kickass" Ellis, Intern Extraordinaire

Kickass? Can do!

I’ve defined myself in a lot of ways over the past few years as I exited college and entered the world of cover letters and interviews, and the popular “tell me a little about yourself” question throws me as equally for a loop as anyone else. Where do I start? I’m a complicated creature.

My mom and I at a friend's wedding.

My mom and I at a friend's wedding.

So when I heard that Two Spoons Photography was looking for a intern, I did my research and found a company that not only understands complexity, but celebrates it. That’s what kept my attention: Carly and Emaleigh begin where conventional ends.

I’m excited to use my existing knowledge of technology and social media to help grow Two Spoons, and I’m looking forward to working with a community so welcoming and diverse.

Besides, who doesn't want to work for people who use the word “kickass” in their job listing?

Q&A:

Who?  Leigh Ellis, a recent Richmond transplant with a love for technology and literature, but not, in fact, mobile readers. (My Kindle is relegated to gathering dust.)

What? Homo sapiens nerdus -- a subspecies of the Homo sapiens sapiens (the “anatomically modern human”). Your typical nerdus can be found playing Dungeons & Dragons (love it), writing interactive fiction (challenging and fun) and watching Game of Thrones (but really, who doesn't?).

When? Starting now! With coffee! Or tea!

Where? Mostly online, mostly from Richmond, but sometimes in Northern Virginia.

Why? Woman cannot live off candy alone. Also because I’m a sucker for love stories (generally the impetus for weddings), the web is my favorite and writing is the best!

How? With my Intel Core i5-3570 CPU running at 3.40 Ghz with 32 GB of RAM and NVIDIA GeForce GTX 660 Ti video card. And sometimes with a Mac, when I have to.

Favorite thing about weddings? The dancing (aka, the open bar).

Favorite color? Yellow.

Favorite quote? The Man In The Arena”: The popular and moving excerpt from Theodore Roosevelt’s 1910 speech “Citizenship In A Republic.”

michael & maggie! // richmond va engagement

I don't even think I can explain how adorable Maggie & Michael's engagement story is. To give you a sense: it involved a scavenger hunt, [cute not creepy] creeping, balloons, a park, and a fake story about a broken down car on an overpass. For their session, Maggie & Michael brought me to where it all unfolded: Bryan Park. We had such a good time traipsing around in the greenery (and getting bitten by a few moquitoes)! Congrats to both of y'all!

The past ~3 months have been such a whirlwind and I'm so giddy about all the great developments happening down here! This week, one of my photos of The Green Boys was in Style Weekly (click here if you wanna check out their kickstarter campaign):

Richmond Tarot Project Behind-the-Scenes: Wheel of Fortune!

I had such a great time shooting the Wheel of Fortune card for the Richmond Tarot Project, in part because of how awesome the folks at Amuse in the VMFA were. However, there was so much greatness happening--great modeling, great art direction, and great site staff--that it was almost impossible to pick a favorite for the card! So I wanted to give y'all a peek into some of the shots that didn't make it to the final cut. What do you think?

Mommy & Me Portrait Session: Baker and Lily!

Last week we had some unseasonably warm weather so Baker and Lily and I went on an adventure to Belle Isle! Lily is a fan of the rocks and sticks, Baker is a fan of the water and trains, and I'm a fan of spending time in the sunshine taking photos!

Baby Bobbie's First Photo Session

Gotta love a late afternoon hangout with a darling baby and her two mommies! I had so much fun meeting baby Bobbie and ALL HER HAIR that I didn't want to stop shooting...but after a while she was ready for dinner. In the meantime I captured a ton of adorable faces and sweet moments:

Family Portrait Session: The Morgan Family!

To call my afternoon with Cristan, Clair, Henry, and Jack "delightful" would be a vast understatement. Aside from the general awesomeness of photographing tattooed parents (and a kid wearing a bowtie and suspenders), I was excited to get a chance for some behind-the-scenes time with one of Richmond's coolest new frontmen (check his site: clairmorgan.com). The Morgans did not disappoint:

Pre-wedding Session: Mike and Renae!

I can't even begin to describe how happy I am to share these photos with you--and to share the excitement that one of my oldest, dearest friends is gonna be a groom! When I was a freshman in college, I attended a dance showcase and was wowed by an amazing tap dancer I saw in one of the numbers. After the performance I approached him and expressed how impressed I was, how I'd always wanted to learn to swing dance, but how a fear of dancing with strangers (and tall people, because of the awkwardness) had kept me from trying it out. Mike, being the generous-hearted person he is, proceeded to offer to teach me, one-on-one and free of charge, to dance. For the next couple years we met weekly on campus for swing lessons, and became good friends through the process! I'm so so glad that now, many years later, I got to not only photograph him with his love Renae (a super wonderful woman in her own right) in a little pre-wedding shoot, BUT I get to shoot them on their big day!
